Goals! Goals! Goals!

City have gone goal crazy in December!  An excellent performance away to European champions Bayern Munich produced a 3 - 2 win, all the more amazing because City were under strength.  A few days later City produced another amazing result against league leaders Arsenal, a 6 - 3 win against the most solid defence in the Premier League. City have been drawn against Barcelona in the next round of the Champions League. I never thought I'd see the day when Barcelona would 'fear' playing against City as reported in the Spanish media!

Niall Quinn Saves!

Outfielders spending some time in goal was a more regular occurrence back in the days of one or two substitutes. Therefore, it paid to have a decent keeper amongst your outfield ranks, and Niall Quinn was so good between the sticks that he was Ireland’s third choice keeper in their Italia 90 squad.

A year later, he’d just headed Manchester City in front against Derby County when his keeper Tony Coton was given a red card after taking Dean Saunders down in the penalty box. Alan Harper immediately tossed the gloved to the Irishman, who barely had time to don them before making a sensational save from Saunders’ subsequent spot-kick. City went further ahead before Mick Harford finally netted past Quinn. However, a 2:1 defeat for Derby wasn’t enough with Quinn’s penalty save basically condemning The Rams to relegation.  Text originally posted on 'Boylesports.com'.

City v Swansea 2013

Samir Nasri struck twice as Manchester City moved into third in the Premier League with victory over Swansea on 1st December 2013.  What on earth is Swansea goalkeeper Tremmel doing in this photo?!  He's going the wrong way, eyes shut and what looks like a painful body position!  City are going great at home, here's hoping they can start winning away.

Bert Trautmann

City legend Bert Trautmann, the German goalkeeper who won the FA Cup with City in 1956, has died at the age of 89.  Trautmann is best remembered for playing the final 17 minutes of City's Cup final win against Birmingham City with a broken neck. He played more than 500 times for City between 1949-64, having first arrived in England as a prisoner of war.  A true legend who had a truly remarkable life.

Mancini sacked!

Roberto Mancini has been 'relieved of duties' by City's owners, exactly one year to the day they won the Premier League.  I hope the most successful City manager since Joe Mercer will always be remembered for his achievements at City and not for his failings, as the media love to point out.  Mancini succeeded where countless other managers down the years failed dismally.  I will never forget the joy of seeing City win the FA Cup and especially the Premier League title, which I thought I would never see in my lifetime!  The 6 - 1 victory over United wasn't bad either!  I'm sure most Blues will wish Roberto all the best in his future managerial career,  I'm just hoping one of his future teams doesn't come back to haunt us!

FA Cup Final 2013

Manchester City produced a strangely subdued performance against Wigan,  eventually losing to an injury time goal.  City were overwhelming favourites to win,  having beaten Wigan twice already this season.  It says a lot about City, and how far they've come, when finishing 2nd in the Premier League and being FA Cup finalists is deemed as a 'poor' season!  Mancini's failure to deliver a trophy will probably result in the Italian losing his job as manager, even if he did win the Premier League and the FA Cup in previous seasons.  I'm looking forward to next season, it will be interesting to see who City buy in the summer and who leaves from the current team.  There is also the matter of United replacing Alex Ferguson with David Moyes, who will be under immense pressure from the start to keep winning trophies.  It's not the end of the world or the lowest point in City's history, but it's still very disappointing to lose any final.

City win Manchester Derby! (8th April 2013)

1. Milner puts City 1 - 0 up,  United scored an equaliser through an unlucky Kompany own goal.

2. Aguero scores the winner, a goal remarkably similar to the legendary goal he scored v QPR that won the title last season.

City's 1975 victory at Highbury

The last time Manchester City managed to secure a league win away at Arsenal was almost 38 years ago.  On October 4, 1975 Tony Book's visitors held a three-goal lead, but almost threw it away as Arsenal fought back. Goals from Hartford, Royle and Marsh put City 3 - 0 up, then Ball and Copley for Arsenal reduced the deficit to one goal.

That season City went on to win the League Cup at Wembley, beating Newcastle 2-1 in the final. But Arsenal finished a dismal 17th – their lowest finish since 1925.
